Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Producer Criticises NBA's 'Janky-Ass AI'

The details: The National Basketball Association (NBA) has shown off a new generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) tool that promises to personalise the live game viewing experience for fans watching on digital platforms.‘NB-AI’ is a voice-activated assistant that analyses live video in real time to answer fan questions or to transform footage into something entirely new by interpreting user commands. It is the ability of NB-AI to create something entirely new, rather than just analysing already available data to respond to queries or make predictions, that makes it an example of Gen AI rather than conventional.

The Takeaway: Begs the question how they trained it without permission and conflicts between creatives and the tech is apparent. Money talks though and this isn’t going to stop. Like social media that doesn't have to play by the same legal rules as linear TV (why is that?) big money will just flood the market with copied, ill-gotten work until everyone gives up.

"I’m a big NBA fan, and I love that people are excited about Spider-Verse, but this janky-ass AI looks nothing like the hand-crafted innovative artistry of the films," Miller said on X/Twitter.

BBC details first plans for generative AI

The details: The BBCs approach to working with Gen AI technology and outlined three principles:

  1. always act in the best interests of the public

  2. always prioritise talent and creativity

  3. always be open and transparent with audiences when using AI to support content-making

Use cases include for the moment fairly straight forward process efficiencies for example reformatting existing content in a way that widens its appeal. For example, taking a live sport radio commentary and changing it rapidly to text for BBC Sport’s live pages. Improving search and tagging for finding material. and others.

The takeaway:

This confirms how we think the best current position of AI application in content production is. Essentially helping with the areas of most friction. The space between the tools that we use to make them.

Disney Imagineer Builds Real-Life HoloTile

The Details:

  • Lanny Smoot, a Disney Imagineer, introduces the HoloTile, an innovative technology enhancing virtual reality experiences.

  • The HoloTile, an omnidirectional treadmill floor, allows users to move freely in a virtual environment, staying centered on the platform.

  • This invention addresses the challenge of physical movement in VR, offering a solution for more immersive and interactive experiences.

The Takeaway: Whilst not directly AI, the invention will be of interest to those utilising AI, either in experience based and those that might seek to utilise AI in with volumes or in VR. The HoloTile represents a significant leap forward in virtual reality technology, potentially transforming how we interact with digital worlds. Its implications extend beyond entertainment, promising advancements in various fields such as training simulations and physical rehabilitation.

Elon Musk asks court to decide if GPT-4 has human-level intelligence

As part of a lawsuit against OpenAI, billionaire Elon Musk has asked a court to determine whether GPT-4 is an artificial general intelligence, capable of human-level tasks

ON THE HORIZON

Sora has many very animated. In reality it’s a long way off story telling capability and is like a video game. The concept though of text to video is an indication of where the (increasingly not too distant) future is.

As AI reduces employment in the short term (it may well create new jobs but the main friction will come from the speed of change) sentiment towards use of AI will not be that positive and whilst its use will be widespread, many current businesses and roles will narrow and become niche but premium.

As polarisation grows and technological risks remain unchecked, ‘truth’ will come under pressure.

Authentic human interaction will be key. As environmental pressure increases with global warming, how can A.I. be sustainable? Green intelligence is required so we make the right choices.

The next decade will usher in a period of significant change, stretching our adaptive capacity to the limit. A multiplicity of entirely different futures is conceivable over this time frame, and a more positive path can be shaped through our actions to address risks today. The biggest risk we see is in the short term misinformation and distrust. Don’t believe everything you read or hear!

Kind is cool.
